XL Hybrids uses motors from Parker Hannifin and lithium ion batteries from Johnson Controls to convert conventional vans into hybrid electrics for about $8,000.

Massachusetts-based XL Hybrids, which has developed kits to convert Class 1 to 3 commercial vans to hybrid electric operations for about $8,000, last week disclosed an installation partnership and distribution agreement with Leggett & Platt.

Leggett & Platt is incorporating XL’s hybrid powertrain directly into its existing ship-through process, “providing a one-stop shopping experience for commercial fleets,” XL says.

XL uses Parker Hannifin motors and spiral-wound lithium nickel cobalt aluminum cell batteries from Johnson Controls to improve vehicle efficiency. “By storing energy wasted in braking and reapplying it during acceleration, XL Hybrids technology decreases fuel use and carbon dioxide emissions by up to 21.2% on urban routes, while operating with the same durability and reliability as traditional vans and trucks,” the company says.

“XL Hybrids’ product makes economic sense for our fleet customers, offering a quick payback, along with all the benefits of ship through. The ease of installation is amazing and allows us to drop it right into our existing production process,” said Leggett & Platt install operations VP John Forest.

“XL Hybrids has a real winner here,” Forest said. “This partnership provides a great way for our fleets to reduce fuel costs, resulting in total life-cycle cost reduction.”

“The combination of our product and our relationship with Leggett & Platt will offer tremendous value for fleet customers who want a seamless order and low-cost delivery option for hybrid vans across the country,” said Clay Siegert, XL co-founder and supply chain VP.

He’s here at WTS2013, answering questions about the Ford F-150 cargo van with an XL hybrid driveline upfit on display at Leggett & Platt’s Booth 1421.

XL has previously named New England’s Henley Transmission Services, with nine locations the largest franchise holder of AAMCO automotive service centers, as an installation partner.
