Quantum for PSI Engine And CNG Fuel Systems
California’s Quantum Technologies, a provider of natural gas fuel systems including compressed natural gas fuel tanks, is promoting the outside hardware for a new 8.8-liter natural gas engine by Power Solutions International, as well as a line of complete bolt-on CNG fuel tank assemblies, both for medium duty trucks.
“Quantum’s new medium-duty CNG fuel systems are designed to provide a bolt-on solution to quickly outfit a truck to operate on CNG,” said Quantum president and CEO Brian Olson. “They are specifically designed for ease of installation, safety, durability and to provide maximum value and operational ease.”
The production-ready CNG fuel assemblies employ Quantum’s Q-Lite brand all-composite lightweight Type IV CNG tanks. They are available in a variety of configurations, ranging from 24 gasoline gallon equivalent to 64 GGE capacities.
Quantum’s plan is to supply the bolt-on CNG fuel tank assemblies for trucks, including trucks powered by PSI’s new 8.8-liter engine. A naturally aspirated version will be rated at 250 horsepower and the turbocharged version at 350 horsepower, Quantum says. They are “specifically matched to the performance required for Class 4-6 trucks where there are very limited options available today.”
“Medium-duty truck manufacturers haven’t had an option for CNG engines in the larger Class 4-6 truck applications,” said PSI CEO Gary Winemaster. “Truck OEMs have asked for an engine with the performance of our
8.8-liter CNG engine and we’ll be delivering later this year.”
Quantum notes that PSI offers engines with displacements ranging from .97 to 22 liters – and has supplied more than 2 million of them. Quantum itself has supplied more than 20,000 alternative fuel systems to OEMs including General Motors. Quantum says it “intends to supply select components to PSI to support volume production of the 8.8-liter engine.”
The Quantum CNG fuel tank assemblies come complete with integral fuel receptacle, pressure gauge, safety systems including shut-off valves, pressure relief devices and pressure sensors, and fuel metering subsystems including pressure regulator and thermal management. “Available fuel system configurations include single, dual and triple module systems to accommodate a variety of popular medium duty truck platforms,” the company says.
Quantum is at Booth 5578.
