Dual Fuel Systems on Pre-EGR, 12.7-Liter DDC Engines

Landi Renzo USA, the North American arm of Italy’s world-leading supplier of gaseous fuel systems for light duty vehicles, is branching to Class 8 trucks with a dual fuel system installed by partner Baker Electromotive.

Landi (Booth 1345) and Baker are placing trucks with factory re-manufactured Detroit Diesel engines with Freedom Transport of Illinois. The CNG-diesel vehicles are Freightliner Coronado gliders fitted with pre-EGR, 12.7-liter DDC Series 60 engines.
The engines are installed by Dave Syverson Truck in Albert Lea, Minn. Baker in turn installs the Landi Renzo dual fuel hardware – dubbed DNG, for dual fuel CNG – and Baker-designed CNG cylinder assemblies.

The multi-vendor set-up “allows us to produce an OEM-level truck using an aftermarket strategy,” says Baker Electromotive chief Skip Baker.

“We make it brand new and then we displace up to half the diesel fuel,” he told Fleets & Fuels. Baker has used CNG cylinders from 3M
(Booth 1429) and Quantum (1833) for the dual fuel Freedom Transport vehicles.

Landi Renzo hardware includes an ECU capable of interfacing with diesel electronics, pressure regulator, fuel injectors, fuel pump actuators, and accelerator pedal interfaces. Landi secured U.S. EPA OUL/outside useful life approval of the DNG system late last year.

Freedom has one Landi-Baker CNG-diesel dual fuel truck in hand and has purchased the gliders to potentially convert another nine. The firm is looking at dedicated CNG vehicles too.

In light duty vehicles, Landi recently secured U.S. EPA certification of its CNG-gasoline bi-fuel conversions of 2015 Ford F-250 and F-350 pickups with the 6.2-liter engine. It has U.S. EPA and California Air Resources Board certification of its dedicated-CNG Ford E-450 cutaway chassis with 6.8-liter engine for 2014.

Landi, a Qualified Vehicle Modifier for Ford vehicles, noted last month that National Energy Equipment, its sole official distributor for the Canadian market, has likewise been named a Ford QVM, with Transport Canada accreditation. Landi is also the proprietor of the Baytech line of NGV conversion systems.
